Biography

Josh Gottheimer is a Democratic member of the U.S. House of Representatives, serving New Jersey's 5th Congressional District since January 3, 2017. The district encompasses parts of Bergen, Passaic, and Sussex counties. In Congress, Gottheimer is known for his bipartisan approach, co-founding the Problem Solvers Caucus in 2017 and serving as its Co-Chair during the 115th through 118th Congresses. He currently serves as Vice-Chair, focusing on issues such as lowering taxes, protecting the environment, making healthcare more affordable, safeguarding national security, and improving infrastructure.

Education and Political Experience

• Education:

  • Bachelor of Arts in American History from the University of Pennsylvania, summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa.
  • Studied at Pembroke College, Oxford, as a Thouron Fellow.
  • Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School.

• Political Experience:

  • Speechwriter for President Bill Clinton.
  • Adviser to the presidential campaigns of Wesley Clark, John Kerry, and Hillary Clinton.
  • Worked at the Federal Communications Commission, Ford Motor Company, and Microsoft as General Manager for Corporate Strategy.
  • Visiting fellow at Princeton University’s Center for Information Technology Policy.
  • Taught history at the University of Pennsylvania.

In Congress, Gottheimer serves on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, where he is the Ranking Member of the National Security Agency and Cyber Subcommittee, and on the House Financial Services Committee. He is also Co-Chair of the bipartisan SALT Caucus and the Law Enforcement Caucus, and a member of the House Democratic Steering and Policy Committee, the Blue Dog Coalition, and the New Democrat Coalition.
