Biography

Alex Padilla, born on March 22, 1973, in Los Angeles, California, is the first Latino to represent California in the United States Senate. The son of Mexican immigrants—his father a short-order cook and his mother a housekeeper—Padilla was raised in the working-class community of Pacoima in the San Fernando Valley. He attended local public schools and graduated from San Fernando High School. Padilla's political career began in response to California's Proposition 187 in 1994, a measure aimed at denying public services to undocumented immigrants. This initiative galvanized him to engage in grassroots activism, leading to his election to the Los Angeles City Council in 1999 at the age of 26. He later served as the council's youngest president and acted as mayor during the aftermath of the September 11 attacks. In 2006, Padilla was elected to the California State Senate, where he authored over 70 bills, including significant legislation on climate change and renewable energy. He served as California's Secretary of State from 2015 to 2021, implementing measures to expand voter registration and enhance election security. Appointed to the U.S. Senate in 2021 to fill the vacancy left by Vice President Kamala Harris, Padilla was elected to a full term in 2022. He is a member of the Democratic Party and resides in the San Fernando Valley with his wife, Angela, and their three sons.
