Biography

Herbert Montague "Tim" Richards III is a Democratic politician serving as the State Senator for Hawaii's 4th District, which encompasses areas from North Kona through North and South Kohala to North Hilo. Born and raised in North Kohala, Richards grew up working on his family's Kahua Ranch, a cattle and sheep operation. Before entering politics, he practiced as a veterinarian and managed agricultural operations, fostering a deep appreciation for Hawaii's land and its stewards.

Richards was elected to the Hawaii State Senate in November 2022. Prior to this, he served on the Hawaii County Council from 2015 to 2022, representing District 9. During his tenure, he focused on agricultural policy and food security, serving as Chair of the Committee on Agriculture, Water, and Energy Sustainability, and Vice-Chair of the Committee on Environmental Management.

In the State Senate, Richards has held several leadership roles, including Assistant Majority Whip and Chair of the Hawaiian Affairs Committee.

Education

• Hawaii Preparatory Academy: Graduated in 1977.
• Washington State University: Earned a Bachelor of Science in Animal Science and a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 1984.
