Biography
John Joseph McGuire III, born on August 24, 1968, in Richmond, Virginia, is a Republican politician serving as the U.S. Representative for Virginia's 5th Congressional District since January 3, 2025. Raised in Central Virginia, McGuire faced early childhood challenges, including time in the foster care system and attending nine different elementary schools. His grandparents eventually took him and his sister in, providing stability until their father achieved sobriety.
After high school, McGuire enlisted in the United States Navy, serving ten years as a Navy SEAL. During his service, he became a sniper and instructor, completing multiple deployments worldwide. Following his military career, he founded SEAL Team PT, Inc., a fitness organization aimed at enhancing the strength, health, and confidence of individuals and teams. His company has trained Division I athletes and corporate teams globally.
McGuire's political career began in 2018 when he was elected to the Virginia House of Delegates, representing the 56th district. He served in this role until 2024, when he briefly held a seat in the Virginia State Senate for the 10th district. In 2024, he successfully ran for the U.S. House of Representatives, defeating incumbent Bob Good in the Republican primary and winning the general election against Democrat Gloria Witt.
In Congress, McGuire serves on the House Armed Services Committee and the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability. He focuses on reducing government size, enhancing infrastructure, and supporting agriculture.
McGuire and his wife, Tracy, reside in Goochland, Virginia, and have five children.
